THE GREATER THE DEDICATION. THE GREATER THE SACRIFICE. THE GREATER THE GAIN.
Great Gain Athletics Inc is a 501(c)(3) non-profit sports mentoring organization serving the Los Angeles area and surrounding communities. We seek to improve the lives and well being of youth and young adults through our sports mentoring programs, activities and events. Our purpose is to provide access to opportunities, resources and guidance for underrepresented young people who may have experienced socioeconomic disadvantages. Our vision is to cultivate a mentoring community through one of a kind experiences that give young people the best chances to succeed as athletes on the court and beyond the game.
REACH BACK, GUIDE FORWARD
As advocates for mental health and wellness, we are strongly committed to the social, economic, academic and psychological development of young people who come from at risk and/or underrepresented communities. For many, basketball has become refuge beyond the game. It teaches important life lessons that can prepare young people for the challenges that can deter them from reaching their goals. Without guidance, many are forced to make choices that may impair their chances to succeed in life.
Our vision is to cultivate a mentoring community that reaches young people through unique and memorable sports experiences. We want to offer a support system in a judgement-free environment where they can develop skills, tools, and work ethic they need to be successful. We want them to take the next step in their careers as positive, productive members of society and rid negative perceptions and stereotypes.
A PERSONAL EXPERIENCE
Coach Mike, a Chicago native, who only started playing organized ball at the age of 17, was considered an under the radar, misguided athlete who didn’t believe a career in basketball was in his future. Until, his high school coach changed his outlook on life.
When he realized his potential to play at a high level, he also became aware that the resources and mentorship he needed to support his journey was not readily available. Now, after 8 years as an international professional athlete, Coach and Mentor, Mike recognized very quickly that there were far too many young people, especially young black males whose experiences were parallel to his own. Mike and his wife, Tricia decided it was time to do more and founded Great Gain Athletics Inc. Their flagship programs focus on mental health awareness, business education & training and sports mentorship.
